Closed Shelf

FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is a closed shelf?

You may have noticed when searching for a book on the OPAC (online catalog) something called a closed shelf.  These books are not shelved in the library.  They are housed in the librarian's office.

Why are certain books on a closed shelf?

The AZ Legislature passed a bill called HB 2495 on June 23, 2022 and signed into law by Governor Ducey on July 6, 2022.  Arizona Statute 15-120.02 states that a public school in our state may not refer students to or use any sexually explicit material, unless the material possesses serious educational value, possesses serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value and parental consent is received.

Who does this law affect?

This law applies to classroom teachers who require their students to read novels.  It also applies to all school libraries in the state of Arizona.

How can books be checked out from the closed shelf?

We need your parent (s)  or guardian to sign a consent form.  The title of the book must be written in this form. The library staff has copies of the forms.
