What is AVID?

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, inquiry/critical thinking, collaboration/teamwork, organization, and reading skills. The program is now offered throughout the United States and even some schools in other countries.

Are AVID and Wilson College Prep a good choice for my child?

The best students for AVID and Wilson College Prep are usually the B or C students who have shown college-going potential. Students need to be focused on the idea of fulfilling their college going dreams. Other students who may benefit from AVID are first generation, historically underserved, low-income, single parent family, and those that come from special circumstances. All go through an extensive application process. 

What will my child learn?

The curriculum focuses on building skills and developing behaviors that lead to success. Students will develop a variety of interests and learn important study and time-management skills. They can then practice those skills in challenging courses, such as honors and Advanced Placement classes, they are required to take. Students learn how to approach challenging problems through college-mentor led tutoring called Tutorials. They also explore different careers and learn about the college application and college-going process.

How do students do once they leave high school?

About 78 percent of AVID graduates were accepted to a four-year college or university during the 2013-2014 school year. Nearly all graduated high school. It is Wilson College Prep's goal to have 100 percent of our students graduate high school, be accepted to a four-year college or university, and attend their college or university of choice. AVID high school graduates from 2010 and 2011 outpaced peers who did not participate in the program in persisting through their college freshman and sophomore years, Education Week reported.
