Native American Education Program

PXU NAEP logo

Phoenix Union's NAEP works to support and encourage academic, social, and extra-curricular success for all Native American high school students within our school district by providing culturally appropriate services, resources, and opportunities.

Our staff consists of one specialist and Native American student advisors who connect with Native American students and their families across all 23 of our PXU schools. Regarding students, the advisors serve as liaisons between our PXU staff, NAEP families, and the local Native American community.

We recognize the importance and uniqueness of Native American students and NAEP works to ensure they are valued, respected, and supported throughout their educational career at PXU. NAEP also provides insight and knowledge of Native American history, the importance of cultural identity, and the value of traditional teachings. Additionally, the NAEP team assists the PXU community by promoting cultural and academic enrichment opportunities.

Lastly, we partner with several organizations and post-secondary institutions including Phoenix Indian Center, Native Health, Maricopa Community Colleges (HOL, ACE, and Dual Enrollment), and local tribal education departments to support our PXU students.

We welcome and encourage all Native American students and their families to participate and engage in our events and benefit from our services and resources.

Program Funding

NAEP offers services and supports by means of supplementary federal funds: Title VI and Johnson O’Malley (JOM). The purpose of these funds is to meet the unique educational needs of our Native American students to support them both academically and culturally. In addition, these funds are to be utilized for allowable costs only and must follow both federal and PXU district policies and procedures.

In order for eligible NAEP students to receive financial assistance, our federal entities require the following documentation:

  • Certificate of Indian Blood

  • ED506 Form (Title VI)

  • JOM305 Form (Johnson O'Malley)

In addition, our funding sources are governed by a set of by-laws established by the PXU NAEP Parent Committee. In our district, the Indian Education Committee (JOM) and the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) are combined.

We encourage any parents of current Native American students in PXU to join the committee, and we also offer training. If you are interested, please reach out to the NAEP Specialist.
