For seventy years, the Phoenix Indian Center has enriched the lives of American Indian people through the long-standing services we provide and through our several relationships. We are the first urban Indian Center in the Nation of its kind. As one of the early American Indian non-profits, we are a leader in doing this work and continue to be the connection to American Indian communities across the Nation, serving as a home-away from home for our urban American Indian community. We do this by continuing and growing our founding services by offering exemplary employment, educational, cultural enrichment and community engagement services. We are committed to partnering with organizations to maximize the opportunities for the people we serve.
Overview
The Phoenix Indian Center, Inc. was established in 1947 to serve the needs of the American Indians who came to downtown Phoenix to sell their arts and crafts or shop for their families. Our people needed a place to receive messages, freshen up and assistance in finding a job or socializing with other Indians in this urban environment. We recognize that as urban people we all have a strong connection to our homeland, our tribe and are living an urban experience.
After several years of using local community volunteers to help maintain the original location of the Center, on Wall Street (in downtown where Cityscape currently exists), the Center received funding and created a more formal structure. Two long term funders of the agency are the Valley of the Sun United Way and the US Department of Labor.
In 1954, the Center incorporated with the State of Arizona as a private non-profit “501(c) (3)” status. Today, the Center is the primary resource of employment, education, cultural enrichment and community engagement for urban American Indians residing in Maricopa County. It is our goal to keep families intact and help them maneuver through the difficult situations they encounter within their extended family unit. Do you have globally minded students in your classroom?
My name is Alayna O’Keefe and I am the current Youth and Education Intern with Phoenix Sister cities. Thank you for your continued support of Phoenix Sister Cities’ Youth Ambassador Exchange Program! Our Preview Night went well and we are excited to select our 2020 Youth Ambassadors. But there is still time to apply! Applications for the Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Exchange Program are currently open and close Friday, January 10.
High school sophomores and juniors are invited to apply to the Youth Ambassador Exchange Program where they can spend a year serving as an ambassador. As ambassadors, students will spend two to three weeks abroad in June living with international counterparts. In July, the international counterparts will travel to Phoenix to spend three weeks living with the Youth Ambassador and their family. Participating in the Youth Ambassador Exchange Program, students become part of a global community, learn about different cultures, and develop leadership skills.

We are also happy to speak with any students individually that are interested in the program.

Responding to demand from Valley employers, the Maricopa Skill Center is launching five new programs this spring and all are in high-demand areas:
Phlebotomy: prepares students to correctly and safely obtain blood specimens and other bodily fluids and process them in a lab. Students will participate in a 128-hour externship to gain experience in the industry. The program has accreditation from the American Medical Technologists, is 252 hours long and takes approximately two and a half months to complete. Learn more...
Pharmacy Tech: teaches students to receive and verify prescriptions, as well as prepare patient medication. Students will participate in a 240-hour externship in a clinical setting to gain experience in the industry. The program is 675 hours long and takes approximately seven months to complete. Clinical Lab Assistant: students learn how to conduct medical tests on specimens and samples. They will also learn about taking medical histories and recording vital signs. The program is 762 hours long and takes approximately eight months to complete. Learn more...

Customer Service Rep: students learn how to handle all types of customers and ensure that they can perform quality service in a business environment. Year Up - a new partnership that allows youth, ages 18-24, to gain an education and business experience in computer programming or business operations. The program involves a mentorship component and provides stipends to all participants. Learn more...
